After the first quarter of the 2022 season, Marco Bezzecchi is running as the best MotoGP rookie. The Italian from the VR46 team finished ninth in Argentina and Jerez, and with 15 points, he is 18th in the standings.
Luca Marini, one point behind Bezzechi in the provisional world championship, has the current Ducati GP22 at his disposal, while Marco is at the controls of last year’s model.
“In MotoGP you have to learn a lot about the bike and the style,” Marco Bezzecchi introduced. “I think you never stop learning when it comes to this category.”
For the Italian rider, the most complicated things in a MotoGP are “the electronics and the tyres”, although Bezzecchi acknowledges that the former “is no longer a problem” for him.
“Sometimes I don’t understand the tyres, nor did I understand some crashes.”
“If I don’t feel the tires and I don’t have confidence, sometimes I make mistakes. Sometimes I don’t understand the response of the front tire. But when I feel good, it goes quite well.”
According to the Italian, “braking and corner entry” are the most difficult to optimize: “I will have to work on it for a long time, because in general I feel comfortable.”
“There are also areas that I still need time for,” he admitted.
In Argentina, Bezzecchi not only achieved his first top-10 finish with ninth place, but also racked up his first Worlds points. After a crash in the United States, in Portugal he fought for the points in 15th position.
“I was strong in Portugal, but I didn’t have enough time in the dry to understand how I had to ride. In Jerez, the conditions were good. We had time and we were able to work. From the first practice session I felt good,” he recalled.
With eight riders on the grid, Ducati is the largest contingent in the current season. Bezzecchi, for his part, tries to orient himself towards his companions. “In MotoGP, the riding style is different for different bikes. Copying Quartararo or Rins would be impossible,” the 23-year-old said with conviction. “That’s why you have to look at the Ducati.”
