Marko denies the rumours: "There is no exit clause with Gasly"

Formula 1 is on summer break in terms of track and team factory activity, but there is plenty of activity surrounding the driver market, following Fernando Alonso’s decision to leave Alpine to join Aston Martin next week. season.

The Spanish driver’s decision to move from Enstone to Silverstone to fill the vacancy left by Sebastian Vettel led Alpine to announce Oscar Piastri , its current reserve driver, as Esteban Ocon’s new partner.

However, the Australian driver adamantly denied that he will race for the team led by Otmar Szafnauer , and is believed to have been linked to McLaren as a replacement for Daniel Ricciardo.

Although Alpine has stated its intention to defend the contract that they claim to have with Piastri, it is quite likely that they will have to look for a new face to complete their line-up for 2023.

Ricciardo seems the logical choice, and in fact Szafnauer has already said that there would be no problem for the Australian to return to the team for which he already raced in 2019 and 2020, although it would not be a silly season in Formula 1 if other possible candidates did not arise.

One of them is that of Pierre Gasly, who has a valid contract with Red Bull and in June it was announced that he will continue at AlphaTauri during the next season.

To resolve possible doubts, Helmut Marko , advisor to Red Bull and director of the structure’s young driver program, clarified that the Frenchman is not on the market.

“There is no exit clause with Gasly, there wasn’t before the summer break and there won’t be after the summer break,” the Austrian told Sport1 .

The German publication also cites statements by Franz Tost , boss of AlphaTauri, indicating that it would not make sense to let Gasly go to another team on the grid.

“It makes no sense for Red Bull to let Pierre go. If a Red Bull driver has problems, there is no other suitable driver who can replace him. Only Gasly can do it,” Tost said, defending his driver.

Since Gasly was relegated from Red Bull back to AlphaTauri (at the time, it was still Toro Rosso) in the middle of the 2019 season, he has consistently finished the year in the top 10 , although, at the moment, he doesn’t appear to be on his way. repeat. Gasly is 13th in the standings with just 16 points and three top-10 appearances.
