The Spanish pilot underwent a fourth operation on the humerus of his right arm on June 3, in an intervention carried out at the Mayo Clinic, in Rochester (Minnesota), by Dr. Joaquín Sánchez-Sotelo .
The medical team that corrected the rotation of more than 30 degrees that conditioned Márquez so much when he got on the bike considered the surgery a success, and that was the same impression left by the first revision, already back in Spain, two weeks later going through the operating room. The Catalan was then asked to continue with controlled exercises of passive mobilization of the right shoulder and elbow, pending the next check-up, scheduled for this Thursday.
“We have taken an important step in the recovery process. In this second check-up, the doctors confirmed that the humerus is consolidating correctly, with which we can start the physiotherapy of the right arm and cardiovascular training”, comments the Honda rider, in the statement. “I am very excited to be able to recover mobility in my arm to continue advancing,” adds #93.
“In this review, a good clinical and radiological evolution has been confirmed that allows us to advance in the recovery program of mobility and strength of the right arm”, declared, for his part, Sánchez-Sotelo , who summons the patient to be reviewed again in other six weeks, a period that will take him until the end of August.
Márquez returned to compete at the beginning of the last World Cup (2021), after a nine-month absence, as a result of the fall he suffered at the first stop on the 2020 calendar, in Jerez, in which he broke his arm. After that accident, a series of calamities were unleashed that led to three operations that failed to completely resolve his injury.
For this reason, the Cervera runner announced at the end of May, from Mugello , that he had decided to undergo surgery again immediately, a circumstance that would keep him away from the great prizes. In that sense, the expected date for his reappearance is still not clear, even though the intention of all the parties is to do it before the end of this same course, so that he can participate directly in the decision-making of the which will be the new Honda prototype with a view to next season.
