On Saturday, Honda announced that its star rider and winner of six MotoGP world championships, Marc Márquez, made the decision, together with his doctors, to undergo surgery again. The runner could have avoided playing that last race before the operation, but once again he showed his professionalism by giving the callus until the last moment.
“On Saturday, Honda told me that if I didn’t want to run the race, that I could easily take a plane and go home,” acknowledged Marc at the end of the race.
As he also admitted that, once the decision had been made and being already on the starting grid, before the race, those responsible for the brand “told me that now you are here, you have made the decision to race and you have to compete, not you can go out for a spin.”
However, the image after the grueling 23 laps that the race consisted of under stifling heat at Mugello , was to see how, at the end, on the lap of honour, practically all of Marc’s rivals approached, one by one, to his motorcycle to greet him, touch him as a show of affection and wish him a speedy recovery and return to the slopes.
“Among the drivers we know what we live and although there is a lot of rivalry, we have a lot of empathy,” explained Marc on Sunday afternoon at the foot of his truck in the Mugello paddock.
“When there are injuries, and more if it is one after another, hard falls or difficult moments, there is that union between the pilots,” he added.
One of those who most emphasized his support for Marc was the Aprilia rider Aleix Espargaró, with whom he has had a hard time in recent months.
“For example Aleix, with whom we have had our pluses and minuses, also with Fabio (Quartararo) or with Martín, with all of us we have had our scuffles, I wore Jorge at Silverstone last year and there is no rancor in that sense, but when there is a hard moment we all empathize and respect each other, and I am very grateful to all of them. Even Pecco Bagnaia, the winner of the race, I met him a few minutes ago and he said very nice words to me”, he said around five o’clock on a Sunday afternoon.
Now Marc’s desire is none other than to compete again with the rest of the riders on the track, competing at the highest possible level.
“Hopefully the operation goes well and I can compete again, the rivalry stays on the track, but the respect off it among all the drivers is remarkable,” settled the boy from Cervera .
