The news that Marc Márquez and Alex Márquez had put an end to the relationship with their usual representative, Emilio Alzamora, was confirmed this Wednesday with an official announcement by the three parties, and this same Thursday, in the preview of the Grand Prix of San Marino, the two brothers from Cervera presented their new manager, Jaime Martínez, who will take charge of the career of the two from now on.
After not being able to give explanations in Austria “for legal reasons and some details that had not yet been finalized”, Alex gave explanations this afternoon in Misano.
“With Emilio we have had a very long relationship and wear and tear has been created, as is normal,” he added.
“I always give an example, which is like a marriage, two or three years ago the relationship did not flow in the same way and in the end, I was talking to Marc one day at home quietly, we both had the same feeling and decided to talk to Emilio. He had the same opinion and at that point it was best to separate our paths.”
Although Alex acknowledges that the relationship had been deteriorating for some time, he admits that “it was Emilio who negotiated the signing” by Gresini for the next two seasons, closed shortly before the summer. This leads us to think that the lack of confidence has more to do with marketing and advertising issues than with the merely sporting aspect.
“No, it’s like I say. It’s a matter of relationships and being comfortable. A driver depends on his results on the track, and to achieve those results off the track he has to have the team, the confidence and everything with your people, be at ease. When you create all that environment, you make the driver on the track calmer and can focus more on that job. It is not a decision to create a brand or prioritize non-sports. On the contrary, it is clear that Jaime (Martínez, the new manager) has a lot of experience in the other part, managing Red Bull athletes, and knows what we need, but the decision (to break up) with Emilio comes from wear and tear and not because there was something else.
Alex is a Honda rider until the end of the season, and this coming week a decisive test for the future of the bike is being held, tests in which he is open to doing what the factory asks of him, but he does not know what role he is going to play .
“I don’t know if I’m going to have something to prove, whether we have it or not I’m going to do the test, if we don’t have anything to prove I’m going to look to see if we can get something out of the package that we have right now, to see if it can be more competitive between now and the end of the year. We are going to go around, polish details and work with the worn tire, which is where we suffer the most and we will try to do the best test we can for ourselves, whether we have things to prove from Honda or not.”
Ducati has already closed the rider line-up for next season, in that sense Márquez is part of it, but he does not have a factory contract.
“My contract is with Gresini and the team has the Ducati package, the technicians are provided by the factory, which was an important detail for me. The bike will be a 2022 version, what I don’t know is if it will be like the one Pecco Bagnaia and Jack Miller, because there are Ducati that are a mix and others that are completely 2022, and that is what has to be defined.”
