Ten months after the fall that caused the most serious injury of his sports career, the Honda rider returned to command the time table, something he had not achieved since the warm up of the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
The second fastest was Lorenzo Savadori , who was six tenths off the time of the driver from Cervera (Lleida), and who clearly saw the opportunity to get out of the catacombs of the lower part of the classification, where he normally moves.
Pecco Bagnaia , the provisional championship leader, placed third, seven tenths behind Márquez and just five thousandths ahead of Miguel Oliveira , fourth.
Pol Espargaró once again demonstrated his skill on the wet track and was fifth, nine tenths behind his neighbor in the official HRC workshop, while Johann Zarco was sixth, already more than a second behind the first.
Joan Mir , current champion and who will have to go through the first qualifying round (Q1) again, finished seventh and was three tenths ahead of Alex Rins (eighth), his partner at Suzuki, and with whom he will also meet in Q1.
Iker Lecuona , one of the two riders who crashed – the other was Jack Miller – finished ninth, while Luca Marini closed a top 10 distorted by track conditions.
The asphalt meant that many of the favorites did not take risks, such as the two members of the official Yamaha workshop. Maverick Viñales was 16th fastest, almost three seconds behind Márquez, and Fabio Quartararo , 19th.
The scare of the day was given by Franco Morbidelli , who after registering the 17th best lap fell while practicing changing bikes, and had to be helped by his mechanics, who helped him get back into the garage. The Roman sprained his knee, but the team has reported that there is no injury and that he will be able to take part in the next training session.
