Being married is good for your heart health . This is the main conclusion of the study carried out by a team of researchers from the Langone Medical Center of the University of New York (USA).
The work suggests that people who are married are much less likely to develop any type of cardiovascular disease , compared to single, widowed or even divorced people. The results have been presented in the latest scientific session of the American College of Cardiology .
The study covered the analysis of 3.5 million men and women (ages 21 to 99), who conducted a survey that purported to examine the link between heart health and marital status. In the same way, all of them underwent several physical examinations, at the same time that risk factors such as obesity, blood pressure, cholesterol, smoking or diabetes were measured.
The team of researchers found that people who were married had a 5% lower risk of developing any type of cardiovascular disease than those who were single . Divorced people were 5.3% more likely to have any cardiovascular or cerebrovascular disease compared to single and married people. Widowers were slightly more likely to have any vascular disease and coronary artery disease than the other groups.
“People who are married can take care of each other, making sure their partner eats healthy, exercises regularly, and takes prescribed medications,” says Jeffrey Berger, professor of cardiology at New York University Langone Medical Center and lead author of the study.
