The rookie from Madrid was a revelation in his second grand prix, in Qatar , taking pole and his first podium after leading most of the race’s laps. However, two weeks later, in Portimao , he ran into the bitter face of sport: injuries.
Martín suffered a chilling fall during the third free practice of the Portuguese Grand Prix and suffered numerous fractures that forced him to undergo surgery.
The rider from San Sebastián de los Reyes set himself the goal of returning to Mugello last week. In mid-May he was already training in the gym and on a bicycle, but finally the doctors stopped him and preferred that he return to Barcelona, a less physical circuit.
“It’s been a very tough month,” Martin said Thursday during the official press conference for the Catalunya GP. “I’ve been working hard to recover as soon as possible. The goal was Mugello, but it wasn’t the best circuit to come back to. I hope to have a good weekend. I’m not setting any goals, just regaining confidence.”
“I was unlucky in the crash. With new tires, sometimes I don’t know why they have grit. I thought it was clean. I had a highside without turning on the gas. I hit my head and I don’t remember the next 20 minutes. I broke eight bones,” he explained of the fall.
“In the beginning, with the injuries, I couldn’t even walk. I was injured and I watched the races. The change was when I started walking and preparing for Mugello. When the doctor told me that I wasn’t ready yet, it was difficult for me to follow Mugello” said about the recovery.
The 23-year-old pilot took as an example something that Marc Márquez said after spending nine months injured for precipitating his return.
“I don’t know exactly what happened to Marc, but I do know that he missed a lot of races. Perhaps, without his example, I would have returned at Mugello. I remember him saying: ‘There are many races ahead, but only one body.’ The truth is that he is very right. I decided to wait for the doctors to have everything clear, “he settled.
