Marvel admits Tilda Swinton's character in "Doctor Strange" was a mistake

Kevin Feige, the creative mind behind each phase of Marvel, never hides in his statements when asked engaging questions. The last has been to be somewhat regretful of the choice of Tilda Swinton for the role of the old man who instructed a rookie Doctor Strange on his arrival in Asia. In the interview conceived for Men´s Health, Feige admitted that he should have chosen a way to find an Asian actor for the role without resorting to the topical and stereotyped representations of the original character. Although the truth is that the decision to choose Tilda Swinton It was justified, as the title of supreme sorcerer has been passed down to many different people throughout Marvel history, so the director of the first installment, Scott Derrickson ended up creating the role for Swinton, while avoiding any connotations of the stereotypical oriental teacher. Of course, the interpretation of Swinton was not a problem, but the choice of his cast drew criticism from various quarters. Even so, the actress declared at her launch that she was never asked to play an Asian character, since it is something that she would not have accepted. Feige admitted the error in the interview: “We thought we were being so smart and so innovative . We are not going to do the cliché of the Asian old man, old and wise. But it was a wake-up call to say: Well wait a minute is there any other way to solve it? Is there any other way not to fall into the cliché and choose an Asian actor? The answer to that, of course, is yes. “An error that seems to be solved in “Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten rings” In the first Marvel adaptation of the Asian hero Shang-Chi, the villain and father of the protagonist will be played by an Asian actor, Tony Leung. The fetish protagonist of Wong Kar wai will be the authentic Mandarin, the terrorist leader who has put in check more than once to heroes as powerful as Iron man and Daredevil. This appeared falsely represented by an actor in Shane Black’s Iron man 3. In the comics, Shang-Chi is not really the son of the fearsome villain but of that Fu Manchu stereotype, so that change is one of those successful ways to which Feige was referring to with his statements. The sequel titled Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness is directed by Raimi and is expected to hit theaters around the world next March 2022.
