McLaren has remained in the fight to be the best of the rest throughout the season, behind Ferrari, Red Bull and Mercedes. Currently and despite some ups and downs, it occupies fourth position in the constructors’ championship, tied on points with Alpine, and they opted to release their first major package of improvements of the 2022 season in Spain, in May.
Since then, however, they haven’t developed much on their MCL36, just tweaking small parts of the design to perfect it. That has been the case until the French Grand Prix, where at the FIA technical preview, they confirmed that they would debut an update to the sidepod, as well as the floor, as part of a larger package that also includes tweaks to the endplate. of the rear spoiler and in the brake lines.
The modification of the side is accompanied by a new arrangement for the support of the mirrors, an update of the floor and the geometry of the edge that, again, “aims to improve the global load on both axles by redistributing the load around From the bottom”.

McLaren’s upgrades come after Lando Norris said before the Azerbaijan Grand Prix that the team needed a “whole package upgrade” if it was to continue to contend high up in the midfield.
The modifications also include a new spoiler on the brake duct , which is intended to provide greater performance to the car by helping to cool this area.
In addition, new internal ducts have been used as a specific measure for the circuit due to the high temperatures expected this weekend at Paul Ricard, while other elements have been added that benefit the cooling of the pontoons and the engine cover.
Finally, McLaren has made changes to the rear wing endplate of its car “to avoid a reliability problem after its wear in previous races”.
The British driver explained on Thursday that the team was “maximizing the potential of the car”, noting the lack of updates in recent rounds compared to its rivals.
“A lot of others brought improvements in the last few races and yet we’ve managed to stay in the fight and get the points we needed,” Norris said. “So we’ve been doing a good job, I’m happy and we’ll try to keep it that way.”
