The Maranello team announced last week in Imola that it had agreed to renew Carlos Sainz for two more years, that is, until the end of 2024. This makes Ferrari secure its long-term driver partnership, with the Monegasque ending his contract at the same time.
Mick Schumacher is the only driver from the Ferrari young driver academy on the current Formula 1 grid, and he is facing his second year in 2022 with the Haas team, although he also performs the duties of reserve driver for the Italians.
However, the German does not think Sainz ‘s new contract will affect his approach with Haas at all: “I think it is the obvious step for Ferrari, they have two great drivers. Carlos [Sainz], he had a great season last year, and also good racing in this one.”
“So it was clear,” said Mick Schumacher. “For me, it doesn’t change much, as my job is to do my best in the here and now, and that only affects Haas at the moment.”
Sainz’s contract extension came as little surprise after Ferrari began talks over the winter, which resulted in a quick deal. The team’s chief executive, Mattia Binotto , said that they did not consider any other driver, and he was in the same vein as Mick Schumacher; an “obvious” decision.
“Carlos did very well last year, he integrated into the team, he is a very strong driver,” said the Swiss. “I think for us, looking to the future, trying to build the right foundation, it was important to renew at that point in the season.”
“So we know that from now until the end of 2024, we can count on a fantastic line-up, and that is no longer a distraction for the team,” reflected the director of the Italians.

Sainz’s compatriot and ex-Ferrari driver, Fernando Alonso, was pleased that the renewal was announced, and indicated that the Maranello team will remain strong under the new regulations.
“I’m happy for him, obviously, and for Ferrari, I think they’ve done well to stick with him after a good season last year and a good start now,” said the Spaniard.
“They have the fastest car now, so it’s good to see Carlos in that car for a few more years. With these rules they should continue with a very competitive package,” said the two-time world champion.
