The current world champion remains crouched at the top of the general table, in fifth place and 40 points behind the leader, Fabio Quartararo. Until recently, the Spaniard claimed to be in the right place, but the forcefulness of the Frenchman from Yamaha forces him to make a change of pace that he hopes to start putting into practice this weekend, in Montmeló, “a circuit in which he always I felt strong”, as he acknowledged this Thursday.
Last year at this point in the championship – after six grand prix – the Spaniard accumulated 60 points in his locker, five less than now (65), but he was third in the standings, as a result of the instability that reigned for most of of the course.
Aware that those ups and downs will not be nearly as pronounced in 2021, the #36 asks Suzuki to react and start making improvements that will help the GSX-RR take a small step forward, especially on Saturdays.
In Mugello, where Mir added his second podium to date –both are third positions–, both he and Alex Rins, his teammate and who will be out due to injury this weekend, had a hard time beating the Ducati of Jack Miller, with whom they fought for much of the test, in a very clear example of the alarming power deficit of his bike, when measured against the Desmosedici.
“Suzuki has improved less than the other brands this winter. That makes us have to go more to the limit, and that leads us to fall more”, stressed the man from Palma, who day in and day out, asks Hamamatsu for the holeshot , the exit device that the rest of the brands already incorporate: “We are pushing Suzuki for improvements, and the holeshot is something that we are asking for because it will offer us important things. I hope to have it as soon as possible.”
Asked if, given the circumstances, the time has come to ask the builder of the big S to design a motorcycle with which he can be more aggressive, the boy is clear that the solution is not to turn the prototype around, but to refine it in those areas that still have travel.
“I don’t think we need to make a bike that needs to be ridden more aggressively. What we do have to do is push to improve those points where we are a bit behind. What are we missing, two tenths? Well, you have to gain a little power and turn a little more. But I started to go fast in MotoGP when I adapted to the bike, not the other way around”, concluded Mir.
