Phillip Island.- Joan Mir was injured in a very hard fall in the first lap of the Austrian Grand Prix , which caused him to fracture the talus of his right foot, damaging several tendons in the area, which made him miss the Grand Prix of San Marino , where he was replaced by Kazuki Watanabe .
The Spaniard reappeared at the Aragón Grand Prix two weeks later, but the pain and lack of mobility in his right foot, the one with the brake, made him give up, leaving after FP3 at Motorland. He also missed the next two races, in Japan and Thailand, where he was replaced by Takuya Tsuda and Danilo Petrucci, respectively.
After continuing with the rehabilitation at home, this Thursday the 2020 world champion has reappeared in Phillip Island, where he passed the relevant medical check-up prior to being able to take part, this Friday, in the FP1 of the Australian Grand Prix .
“The fracture is much more consolidated,” explained Mir after visiting the doctors on the circuit.
“Only the edema remains. The important thing is that I can ride at 100%, and I think I will be able to do it without thinking too much about my ankle,” he added.
The one from Palma took advantage of last weekend to get on a street bike and see the reaction of his leg.
“I tried the 600cc motorcycle in karting and it went well. I have more stability and I can control what I do with my foot. My foot no longer shakes in the stirrup due to edema”, which was the problem he had in Aragón .
For Mir, who a few weeks ago announced his signing for Honda for the next two seasons, the important thing now is to finish the course with a good feeling.
“I want to finish my stage in Suzuki well. I must gain confidence. Fighting for the podium in Valencia would be ideal”, he sets himself as his goal.
“I think I’m 100% or very close. In that sense I’ve taken a step forward,” he reassures.
As the 2020 champion, Mir can speak with knowledge of what Fabio Quartararo and Pecco Bagnaia are playing for in this final stretch of the course.
“From the outside, I think Pecco is faster at this point in the championship. He’s at a point where I think only he can lose this title. But they both deserve it. I think Pecco has something else,” he said.
Although he does not rule it out, Mir does not see Aleix Espargaró with so many options.
“If Aleix wins it would be for consistency, for heads. But I see Pecco and Fabio with something more than him”, he values this Thursday.
