Mir: "Suzuki has worked harder than I expected"

Sepang. February 4, 2022.- The Mallorcan, MotoGP world champion in 2020, did not have enough last season to revalidate the title, surely a responsibility that corresponded more to the bike than to the rider, powerless in many situations, especially against the almighty Ducati .

According to Joan Mir, the manufacturer of the big ‘S’ has taken note of what happened in 2021 and has stepped up to prevent that feeling of inferiority from repeating itself.

The Hamamatsu brand will do well to take that step forward that both Mir and Alex Rins have been demanding for months, given that their contracts expire next December.

“I know that Suzuki has worked a lot, more than I expected. You have to keep in mind that with this bike they have won a title. Last year they improved, but not as much as the others did. That, for the Japanese it’s not good”, commented the Spaniard this Friday, already from Sepang, where on Saturday he will get back on the GSX-RR ; a refined but continuous prototype with respect to the 2021 version.

“It’s been a while since [Suzuki] realized that the work done last year was not enough to win the World Championship,” added #36, shortly after revealing the livery of the new bike, which incorporates the color black to highlight the bibs more.

The Balearic has no qualms about stating that the sensations he gets from this preseason can have a decisive influence on his decision to continue or not be linked to Suzuki, even if the options he can consider are not many.

“Many riders end their contracts in 2022, and the tests will be very important for me. I feel very good at Suzuki, but it is also true that changes depending on the moment can be positive,” stressed Mir, who concluded the recent season on third in the general table, with 70 points less than Fabio Quartararo, the champion, and without being able to win a race.

As for who he thinks will be the candidates for the title, his list is long, and Marc Márquez also appears on it, although not at the top.

“Márquez is among the candidates for the title, he has been for the last ten years and he will surely be among the favourites. I would not put him first on the list, but he will be there. I would put Fabio first, he has earned it for the fact of being the champion, but there will be several who can fight for the title. My idea is to be among them”, continued Mir , before clinching: “To win a World Championship, the sum between what the motorcycle offers and what What the rider gives has to reach 100%. There are times when the bike is not at the level and it is the rider who has to put in the rest. And not everyone is capable of doing it”.
