Monaco GP F1 Sunday Results & Recap: Race

After a rain-delayed start, race leader Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) took too long to make his stop to fit intermediate tyres, allowing Perez, who was starting third, to take the lead.

Carlos Sainz’s second Ferrari went straight from wet to dry compounds but still rejoined behind Perez, whose bold tire strategy paid off.

Leclerc could only finish fourth, after a second pit stop to set up the dry games, behind the second Red Bull of Max Verstappen.

How was the Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix 2022

The start of the race was delayed due to a downpour that drenched the famous streets, and the formation laps were run behind the safety car on the extreme wet tyres. But the water intensified and they showed a red flag before the race had even started.

Nearly an hour later, Leclerc maintained his pole position lead at the start of Lap 3 , ahead of Sainz, and the chasing Red Bulls of Perez and Verstappen in that order.

With no more rain, the track was drying out. AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly was one of the first to use the intermediate tyres, setting the fastest lap of the race on lap 6 as he worked his way up the positions.

Pérez pitted on lap 17 and rejoined the race in fifth position, but running in clean air. Leclerc and Verstappen pitted on lap 19, with previous leader Leclerc rejoining behind Pérez, who was now leading the pack of intermediates. Sainz stayed in front, aiming to switch from his extreme wet tires to slicks straight away.

Esteban Ocon (Alpine) and Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) touched when battling for eighth at Sainte-Dévote on lap 18, with Hamilton sustaining wingtip damage. Ocon received a 5-second penalty for the crash.

Sainz pitted on lap 22 to fit dry tyres, and was followed by team-mate Leclerc, making his second stop in an apparent panic at the Ferrari wall, allowing Pérez and Verstappen to get into the lead with the intermediate ones. The Red Bulls, fearful of getting the wrong tyres, stopped a lap later.

Pérez rejoined in the lead, ahead of Sainz, with Verstappen (who had a remarkable moment exiting the pit lane and possibly crossing the pitlane line, something prohibited) just ahead of Leclerc. Sainz then had a big skid down the finish straight, when he drove on the wet line to try to pass Pérez, allowing the Mexican to slip ahead and Verstappen to close in.

The race was neutralized by a safety car when Mick Schumacher crashed his Haas into the pool chicane, splitting his car in half. His teammate Kevin Magnussen had also just withdrawn from the test.

After several laps behind the safety car, the FIA showed the red flag to fix the protections. A long delay ensued, with the Red Bulls switching to new medium tyres, while the Ferraris continued on their used hard ones.

The race resumed on lap 33, with Pérez ahead of Sainz, Verstappen, Leclerc, George Russell (Mercedes) and Lando Norris (McLaren).

This part of the race was a procession, compared to the previous one. Early on, Pérez got a good margin on Sainz (who had a scare when he went straight into the Nouvelle Chicane with 20 minutes to go), and moved away from Verstappen and Leclerc.

But Perez suffered quite a bit of front tire degradation as the race entered its final 10 minutes, allowing Sainz to close in on his wake, and the top four went head-to-head in a thrilling finish, but there was no more. position changes.
