Communication between Yamaha and Franco Morbidelli is non-existent. Since the Italian rider sat down to talk with the top executive of the official racing team, Lin Jarvis , who made it clear to him that the lack of support from the factory is reduced to a simple economic issue derived from COVID-19, no there has been more contact.
Morbidelli is the only Yamaha rider who does not have 2021 material and together with his technical chief, Ramón Forcada , he has been isolated from any possibility of change or improvement, with what he has they will have to invent, one on top of the bike and the other in the garage, what they can to survive.
This delicate situation has led Morbidelli to begin to listen to possible offers for the future and even to consider the possibility of leaving next year for his friend Valentino Rossi ‘s team, the VR46, even though Il Dottore believes that Franco should be in a official structure.
Franco won three races last year and was crowned runner-up in the world, but he is the only rider on the grid, apart from Ducati rookies Bastianini and Marini , who does not have an official bike.
This cocktail is the one that made the emotions of the Roman runner explode after crossing the finish line third in the Spanish Grand Prix race, returning to the drawer after a disheartening start to the season.
“The celebration in Jerez was very intense, first of all, because it is a MotoGP podium, and then because of everything we are experiencing,” Franco said in reference to his situation within the Petronas satellite structure.
“We can say that this podium tasted special to me, I felt fantastically well and experienced an explosion of emotions. All the sensations came together at that moment, the emotions overflowed when I crossed under the checkered flag”.
With a 2019 bike and no room for improvement, Morbidelli will have to multiply his efforts if he wants to maintain last year’s level.
“My expectations already had to be reassessed since the two races in Qatar , I immediately realized that I had to raise the bar again if I want to do a season like last year. I hope to continue along the same lines as now and continue working with my team, giving my best whenever I can”, he admitted.
A positive trend that could be undermined this weekend at the French Grand Prix , where rain is predicted, an element that is always complicated, although it can sometimes favor certain drivers.
“Unfortunately I don’t think that’s going to be the case, I’ve never been fast in the wet. I try to be fast, but for some reason I am never able to go fast. It will be an opportunity to try to improve in these types of conditions and see if what we did in the Jerez tests works for us in the wet as well. I hope it will be useful to improve the results, but my options do not increase due to the fact that it is a rainy weekend”, settled the Italian-Brazilian.
