The Ducati rider, who was already the fastest on Friday, took a very fast lap from the heat just two minutes from the end of FP3 to beat the best lap on the Italian circuit, set by Marc Márquez in 2019 with 1:45.519. That earned him to lead the third free practice of the weekend and qualify directly for Q2 , where the pole position of the weekend will be played.
Behind Bagnaia, Fabio Quartararo was the fastest at 157 thousandths of the Italian, beating Brad Binder who climbed to third position at the last minute. Jack Miller set the fourth fastest time, completing the Ducati triple in the top five by Frenchman Johann Zarco .
Alex Rins , who with the clock at zero was out of the top 10, managed to close a fast lap to finish sixth, ahead of Miguel Oliveira (seventh) and the other Suzuki, Joan Mir ‘s (eighth), who as predicted yesterday he solved his problems to sneak directly into the fight for pole.
Pol Espargaró saved Honda’s furniture on his final lap to place 9th, Italian Franco Morbidelli closing the top 10.
Fall of Vinales
Out of the direct pass to Q2 was Maverick Viñales, who suffered a fall one minute from the end of training that prevented him from improving his time, so with the clock at zero he ended up jumping out of the top 10.
Marc Márquez , who came with options on his last lap, ended up penalizing in the last sector and could only finish 12th. Aleix Espargaró will also have to go through Q1, as will Takaaki Nakagami and Alex Márquez , who was 21st.
Valentino Rossi , who, as is tradition at Mugello, wore decorations on his helmet for the first time, was last and penultimate throughout the training session, but the Italian, at the last minute, managed to climb to 18th position and, once again, he will have to go through the first sieve of the timed
