Iker Lecuona scored his second point of the season at the last Spanish Grand Prix, finishing 15th in the Jerez race, one tenth behind his teammate Danilo Petrucci.
The young Spanish Tech3 KTM rider, however, was penalized for a contact with Alex Márquez, as a result of which the LCR Honda rider went down. The three-second penalty was not known until this weekend at Le Mans, and this Friday MotoGP made the revisions public, taking a point in the general classification from Lecuona, who after the penalty appears as 17th in the race.
“It is not that they have waited 15 days to make it public, it came to me at the moment, an hour later that same day. I was working in the box and they told me. I have no complaints in that regard”, revealed Lecuona this Friday at Le Mans.
The KTM rider explained the action, cataloging it as a simple race set.
“Alex passed me at turn six. I am a rider who brakes very hard and in the eighth I tried to take advantage of it, I got inside and touched him, with the bad luck that he fell. It wasn’t my intention, sometimes it happens, a career set, but you never do it maliciously, sometimes it just happens”, explained Iker.
The Valencian took this Friday a step forward in his performance, where he finished 15th, 1.2 seconds behind Johann Zarco.
“We have taken a step. After the Jerez test I felt very comfortable, especially with the front tyre. What has changed the most is that we do not try to adapt the tire to the bike, but rather we do it to the rubber. That has been a turning point to be where I am today. We understand a little better how to ride and how the team has to help me with the bike”.
“I don’t want to set expectations, we have to keep working, but we can think about Q2, we’re three tenths away, it’s been a long time since we were so close”, he said excitedly.
“With our riding style and the bike we have, we didn’t work well. From Jerez both the bike and I have adapted to the rubber, to see what that tire needs, to ride better. We have not done anything crazy, we have changed the setting somewhat, due to the front suspensions, but we have joined ourselves and we are taking good steps forward”, settled.
