The world championship’s search for new countries to expand MotoGP led the World Championship promoter to sign contracts with the five venues where it runs on the Iberian Peninsula: Portimao , Jerez , Barcelona , Aragon and Valencia , conditioned to a possible rotation, ensuring each of the circuits two races in the next three years.
The suspension of the Finnish Grand Prix , which will finally not take place in the short term, offers a new opportunity to the aforementioned circuits to stay on next year’s calendar, which will start, precisely, in Portugal on March 26 next year , as announced by Dorna on August 2 last.
But in addition to Portimao, the 2023 MotoGP World Championship will also pass through Jerez (April 30), Motorland Aragón (May 28), Barcelona (September 3) and Valencia, where the season is scheduled to end on November 19 next year.
While waiting for the 2023 calendar to be officially confirmed in its entirety, the four Spanish circuits plus Portimao will be on the list for sure.
The biggest novelty of the 2023 calendar, as announced by Dorna, is the inclusion, for the first time, of a grand prix at the Sokol Circuit, in Kazakhstan, which is awaiting approval by MotoGP safety officials and that it would be embedded on July 9, between the Assen and Silverstone races, where Finland was going this year before jumping, at the last minute, from the calendar without a return date, for the moment.
Other showy changes are the movement of Aragón from its usual date in September to May 28, and that of Barcelona , which has always been at the beginning of June, relocated to September 3.
The Qatar night race, which traditionally opens the championship, has been rescheduled due to construction work being carried out on the Losail track to accommodate Formula 1 . For now, the night grand prix will be the penultimate of the year, on November 12, even though the local promoters wanted it to be the last, a right that Valencia has by contract and that, for the moment, it has managed to keep unchanged.
At the moment, the announced entry of a grand prix in Kazakhstan does not force Dorna to activate the rotation of the Iberian circuits, although the recent signing of “memorandums of understanding” with authorities in Saudi Arabia and India to bring MotoGP to those countries in the short term, it puts in danger the maintenance, above all, of the four races in Spain and, possibly, the two in Italy.
