The Honda rider explained at a press conference this Thursday in Mugello the evolution of the injury that separated him from the circuits for nine months and the problems that “a recovery of these dimensions” is causing.
Márquez claimed to be getting better and better, but also admitted that the caliber of his injury has caused sequels that “we are trying to understand.”
“It has been improving and I have more and more strength, especially the humerus that was the priority of this injury, so it is improving,” he said.
“In an injury of this magnitude, when you solve some limitations, others appear. The humerus and the elbow have been improving and now the problem has appeared in the shoulder. We are trying to understand, together with the doctors, what is happening. They ask me for time. In the end there comes a point where you go with the patience to take the necessary time that my body asks of me, but whenever possible I will give one hundred percent as I have done up to now”, valued the Spanish rider.
In this cumbersome rehabilitation process, arriving at a track as physical as the Italian one does not accompany.
” Mugello will be difficult for me, I have to accept where I am and make my weekend,” he said.
Precisely on this track Marc suffered a very strong crash on the straight in 2013.
“The straight is a difficult point and this year it will be even faster with the holeshots and all those new things that the bikes have. The solution is not to remove the wall, but to lower the elevation change. It is a discussion that we have every year (in the Security Commission ). Since I had the fall, the wall was removed and they put asphalt. Before it was grass and the wall directly. A bit of safety was gained, but the falls are caused by the change in elevation and the potholes, as happened to Pirro a few years ago. You have to locate the problem and try to fix it. At these speeds, reaching 380 it doesn’t matter where the wall is, you arrive safely”, he explained.
Some voices have been raised in recent days pointing out that after his injury Marc Márquez is no longer who he was and that he has lost his magic.
“I listen to what is necessary and fair, I am realistic and I know my current situation. I know where I want to go and then we’ll see if I can get there. I have confidence in myself as always. At Le Mans it was seen that without physical limitations due to the rain, magic returned, not getting scared after the crash, getting back on track, coming back, being the fastest… these are things that I like, they give me motivation. But I know where I am and what I have to improve. From the first moment I said that I am not ready to go fast, I have limitations that are still there. After nine months injured you need time for your body to be well. When I am, I hope to be the one from before”.
Márquez reappeared in Portimao after nine months out and without being one hundred percent recovered, trying to finish his rehabilitation on the bike. However, at times he seriously considered stopping again and finishing the recovery at home, not on the circuits.
“In a recovery of this serious type, it is normal for pain and limitations to appear and move. The bone is practically consolidated, then it went to the elbow and the shoulder, which is where I am currently suffering the most pain, irritation and inflammation, and that prevents me from exerting the strength I need. This is long, it’s my fourth race, I would like to forget about the arm, but I have to be realistic and I can’t forget and focus only on running. I have to be aware that we have to burn stages and with time everything will improve”.
In reference to the fact that he was considering stopping in Jerez , Márquez admitted it.
“Not only there. It is an issue that is up in the air, for X reasons. If I don’t feel well I’ll do as in the Jerez test (he only did 9 laps). If you have nothing to gain and you see it as dangerous, you consider stopping, we thought about it after Portimao , after Jerez. The important thing is that the progression is ascending. Here in Mugello we will suffer and the sensations will not be good, but we are going to continue accumulating kilometers and making active recovery on top of the tool that we have to use, which is the motorcycle”, settled the rider from Cervera .
