The first free practice in Le Mans began with a cold atmosphere and a wet track, just after FP1 of Moto3, in which up to 17 crashes were seen. That made the drivers of the premier class take some precautions and, logically, mount the wet tires .
However, in the final part of practice the track began to dry out and Jack Miller took advantage of a small advantage in the lane to mount the slick tires for dry and set a time of 1:38.007 that placed him at the top of the classification .
Miller himself then raised his hand as he tried to complete a new turn, signaling that the rain was back. Some riders, including Marc Márquez , had returned to the pits to fit the dry tires, but they could no longer complete any lap as it rained lightly again, which prevented anyone from improving the time of the Australian, winner of the last race two weeks in Jerez.
Behind the Ducati rider finished Frenchman Johann Zarco , from Pramac, who was leading much of the training session, with Joan Mir in third place.
As was the case in Jerez, Mir started the first practice of the weekend with technical problems on his GSX-RR. According to Suzuki, Mir’s bike showed an electronic alarm on the display , and that’s why he took it off the track and returned to the garage to look for his second prototype, with which he set the good lap.
“The issue is currently being investigated by engineers,” the team reported.
Pol Espargaró finished fourth on the time sheet, just ahead of Marc Márquez and the surprising Lorenzo Savadori, who in mixed conditions achieved his best qualifying of the season on the Aprilia.
The leader of the World Championship, Pecco Bagnaia was 7th, ahead of Miguel Oliveira, first KTM, Alex Rins and Aleix Espargaró , who was 10th and marks the provisional cut for the passage to Q2.
Alex Márquez, 11th, suffered a new crash (Turn 3) less than 7 minutes from the end of FP1, while Maverick Viñales , who finished 12th, experienced his first crash of the season in a freak accident at Turn 4, as he He was leaving the box in the final part of training, with wet tires, and at a very low speed.
Behind, Franco Morbidelli was 13th ahead of Valentino Rossi (14th), with local idol Fabio Quartararo, recently operated on for compartment syndrome, finishing 16th. Last year’s Le Mans winner Danilo Petrucci was 19th.
