After a disastrous weekend in Germany that was the last straw that surely broke the camel’s back, Maverick Viñales achieved pole position in Assen this weekend, as well as finishing second in the race. A new podium that, however, was not enough to put a smile on his face.
The rumor jumped this weekend with the possibility that Maverick Viñales resigns to complete the second year of the contract that he has signed with Yamaha, for 2022, leaving for Aprilia .
“No it’s not true,” Maverick said when asked on DAZN if he was going to go to Aprilia.
However, the man from Roses did recognize that leaving Yamaha a year before the end of the contract is a possibility.
“Now, for now we are going to the summer break and we will see. Of course it’s an option, I’ve been thinking about it since the beginning of the season, because I’m not able to unfold my full potential (with the Yamaha), I can’t tell you more”, he added.
When asked what he’s after with this strange move, Maverick got cryptic once again: “The rematch.”
Viñales started from pole, but a bad start ruined his race again.
“On the start, I don’t know why the clutch was burnt. Then it was impossible to pass Nakagam i”, he said before adding: “Fabio closed me off at the start”.
“Then I had nothing else at the end to cut Fabio. The race didn’t go bad, the only thing behind the people was the front wheel (he chose the soft rubber option) that swelled, but it’s not an excuse”, he said.
After a difficult start, Viñales was able to come back to second place in the final.
“I started with the soft rubber in front because I knew I had a very good pace for the second half of the race. I thought I could do a little more, but the truth is that I didn’t have what I had yesterday”, referring to Saturday.
“We weren’t able to finish off, it was a good weekend, but passing Nakagami and Bagnaia was difficult, especially Taka. I was losing half a second behind him.”
“The start penalized me, but I couldn’t gain positions on the straight”, he lamented, but “it’s important to go home with a podium finish”.
In the end, Maverick admitted that he was not very happy despite the second place.
“Knowing that he could have given much more on many more occasions this season, we are going to return to have an even better second half of the year”, settled the boy from Roses.
