After a brilliant start to the season with victory in Qatar , Maverick Viñales has lost consistency and has shown some irregularity that he hopes to settle this weekend on a circuit that motivates him.
The Yamaha rider has won three times here, in 125cc, Moto3 and in 2017, his first year with the brand on the tuning forks in MotoGP.
“For me it is a very special race, it is a circuit where I always come with hope and believing that I can get something more. I come with a special motivation and happy because I really like this circuit”, explained the man from Roses.
Leader of the World Championship after the first race, Maverick is now third, 16 points behind the leader, Pecco Bagnaia, fourth leader after the first four races of the year, which points to an inconsistent course, like in 2020, when it seemed that nobody wanted to win the championship.
“In each race something has happened to a different driver, that’s why there is no clear dominator, but that’s good because it opens up a lot of options for the rest and it’s a lot of fun”, he valued.
Since his comeback after nine months of injury, Marc Márquez has become a standard bearer against the holeshot starter , claiming that it makes overtaking difficult and therefore impoverishes the show. In addition to the Spanish, other pilots consider that it is not entirely safe.
In his appearance before the media, Viñales was asked about the issue and if he was for or against it.
“At the start or during the lap it doesn’t change much, I think if it’s used at the start, it can be used anywhere on the circuit. For the Yamaha it is not dangerous, I don’t know about the other bikes. Even in the corners lying down when I leave it is not either”, and on the option of suppressing it, he assured that “it is a decision that does not belong to the pilot, it belongs to the manufacturers and the regulations”.
Regarding the loss of the show due to the difficulty in overtaking, Viñales was not satisfied.
“I don’t know how the other bikes work, with ours you can overtake and it’s very safe. In our case there are no problems. We only have it at the back, and for starts it would be nice to have it at the front as well. At Yamaha they are working hard to have it as soon as possible”, he said.
Another ongoing debate in MotoGP is the increasing top speed of the bikes. According to experts, in the first curve of Le Mans, which was reached until now at 280 km / h, this year it will be approached at more than 300.
“As long as the tire holds up, there’s no problem, there’s track to brake,” Maverick said.
“It really is crazy to go at 360 km/h , but when you drive on a circuit, with the safety that exists, you don’t have the feeling of going so fast, it’s different from going down the street. The truth is that it’s cool because brutal speeds are being taken, but we always ask for more. I don’t see it as insecure, we have many security systems and the circuits are increasingly prepared”, the boy from the Costa Brava brought iron to the subject.
