In an official statement, the FIM and Dorna Spors have assured this Friday that the new Indonesian circuit, which is finalizing its works, could enter the calendar for the 2022 MotoGP season, in addition to hosting a test for riders of the queen class before to end this year.
“If MotoGP is able to hold events in Southeast Asia towards the end of 2021, efforts will be made to carry out a possible MotoGP team test at the Mandalika International Street Circuit during that time period, in anticipation of the inclusion of the track on the calendar in 2022 ”, he assures in the note, in which there is talk of squaring the event for the month of March, at the beginning of the season.
After the one-two finish at the start of the season in Qatar , representatives from the International Motorcycling Federation and Dorna Sports carried out an inspection at Mandalika last Wednesday.
The track is being built on the island of Lombok, in Indonesia and the works received the approval of Franco Uncini, Loris Capirossi and the general director of Dorna Sports, Carlos Ezpeleta , who evaluated the progress made.
The main goal remains for the new Mandalika International Street Circuit to host a WorldSBK event on November 14, 2021. However, due to the ongoing pandemic, all parties involved have agreed to hold the first ever MotoGP Grand Prix at the track in the first part of the 2022 season, initially during March, according to the note.
The Indonesian Minister of State Enterprises, Erick Thohir , took the arrival of the World Cup for granted and lent his “full support to the MotoGP event to be held in March 2022. This is in line with the accelerated national vaccination program of the Indonesian government. We want to guarantee the safety of national and international visitors,” he said.
“The visit to Lombok was very successful and we can confirm that the Mandalika International Circuit will be one of the most important venues on the calendar in the future”, added Carmelo Ezpeleta , CEO of Dorna.
