The Frenchman, who started fifth on the grid, made a poor start and fell to eleventh place after the first few corners. When the rain appeared on lap five and the riders had to pit to change bikes, he was ninth. However, when he started he was already fifth.
The Pramac rider was one of the most conservative in his choice of wet tires and mounted the rear half. That decision hurt him in the first laps until they got into temperature, leaving more than 15 seconds with the head.
Although once they were in perfect condition Zarco gradually made up ground, in the end 3.9 seconds separated him from what would have been his first MotoGP win.
“The start wasn’t good. I had a little problem avoiding Franco [Morbidelli]. I went too far at Turn 1. Then I lost a lot of time at the chicane. Then it started to rain. The first goal was to get back to the pitlane, because there was a lot of rain. When I changed bikes I was fifth, but with the rear medium rear tire it was difficult to pick up the pace. I needed four laps to get the tire ready. That cost me victory today”, explained Zarco.
Despite staying for the third time this year at the gates of releasing his record in the premier class, the Cannes rider considered the result good, which places him third in the championship, just 12 points behind the new leader, Fabio Quartararo.
“20 points in very difficult conditions, I can only be happy. The victory will come when there is a perfect start. I am very happy with the victory of Jack [Miller], me second, another double for Ducati . It is very positive for us,” he said. .
Zarco, despite running in a satellite team, is in a position to fight to be champion.
“I think I have good experience and motivation too. And the experience with the Ducati is coming. It can always be better with each race. If in each race I can control the situation and be smart at the right time, I have a chance of winning the title. This gives me like it”, settled.
