Nakagami tests negative and flies to Argentina to run on Sunday

A final negative COVID-19 test has given Takaaki Nakagami the opportunity to compete in the Argentine Grand Prix. After receiving the news, the satellite team got underway and finalized all the details so that its regular driver could race on the Argentine track on Sunday.

In this way, the LCR pilot is already in Buenos Aires, on his way to Termas de Río Hondo, where the continuous delays of the material will allow the Japanese pilot to run after testing negative for COVID-19.

“Earlier this week, before flying to Argentina, Taka tested positive, but indicated a low viral load and was asymptomatic,” the team’s official statement read.

In this way, it was decided, together with the medical team, to repeat the PCR every two days. Takaaki Nakagami has now tested negative and will arrive in the paddock on Saturday morning, in time for the start of the on-track action.

The pilot underwent a PCR test this Monday with the aim of traveling to Buenos Aires the next day from Barcelona, where he currently resides. On Tuesday morning, the LCR pilot received a positive result, which prevented him from flying to Termas de Río Hondo to compete in the Argentine Grand Prix.

Nakagami missed his flight and was forced to isolate himself in his apartment in Sant Cugat. However, a new negative result at the last minute has given Nakagami the opportunity to race this Sunday.

“Nakagami is now presenting negative tests and will arrive in the paddock on Saturday morning in time for the start of on-track action as agreed with IRTA and Dorna,” the team added.

Saturday’s on-track action was reduced a few minutes ago to two free practice sessions lasting one hour instead of 45 minutes. The day will begin at 12:35 pm local time. Check the revised schedule for the Argentine Grand Prix here.
