Norris thinks F1 can improve the camera on the pedals in 2022

The experiment carried out in free practice at the 2022 Formula 1 British Grand Prix was the first since a camera was used on the pedals of Pedro de la Rosa’s car in 2000 . On that occasion it was installed on top of the pedals at a slight angle that made it possible to see the movement of the Spanish rider’s feet.

At Silverstone, however, the camera was located in the lower part of the driver’s footwell, next to the steering column, pointing to the section behind the pedals. After seeing the images of his car, Lando Norris recognized that it was not appreciated much, especially since modern Formula 1 single-seaters do not have the third clutch pedal , as was the case in the past, despite the fact that at the beginning of the millennium already had disappeared.

“I think just because there’s no clutch, it’s always going to look a little bit simpler and easier,” the Englishman acknowledged. “I think that’s a given, like driving with the clutch and doing the heel-toe and stuff, which I did a lot at Ginetta in 2014.”

“You feel like there’s a lot more to do, and it’s not an easy thing to do, but it’s also a lot of fun. Now it’s easier, you just have brake and throttle,” said the McLaren driver.

The 22-year-old agreed that the view from the top of the pedals could be much better: “I think it should be the other way around, what you can see right now is the displacement of the pedals because it is in a slight angle”.

“So you can see how hard you push, but otherwise, of course, you’d see the front end, where you wouldn’t see the pedal travel as much,” Norris said. “But I know what they’re talking about, because I’ve seen the old video they compare it to, and it seemed rougher before, I think it’s a bit of what it is.”

However, the British admitted that there was not much space to place the camera: “I’m sure there may be a slightly better position to see it, but there is not much space there.”

“It’s not easy to mount, but maybe if you put it around a bit more… That way you could see things better, instead of as far back or in front, at a better angle, that way you’d see how the pedals move. I think which is something they are going to investigate,” Lando Norris said.
