Official: Gasly will compete in F1 2023 with AlphaTauri F1

Although Gasly actually had a contract with AlphaTauri until the end of 2023, the news that Checo Pérez had renewed for two years with Red Bull caused the future of the Frenchman to be questioned, who saw the door of the main energy drinks team close.

But AlphaTauri team principal Franz Tost stressed at last weekend’s Canadian GP that Gasly was “100” confirmed” to stay in Faenza next year, recalling that “he has a valid contract.”

In case there were any doubts, the team has officially announced that Pierre Gasly will stay for the 2023 season.

“The 26-year-old Frenchman has been with us since 2017 and this continuity will be a great asset as he enjoys an excellent working relationship with his group of engineers and the entire team,” AlphaTauri said in the statement.

“Pierre already knows what it’s like to win a race, ride three times and set three fastest race laps and to date he has scored a total of 325 points in Formula 1. He has also earned a reputation for being very good in classification”.

“I’ve been with this team for five years and I’m proud of the road we’ve traveled together and the progress we’ve made,” Gasly said.

“I am happy to continue with my AlphaTauri team. The new regulations this year have created new challenges for us and being able to plan our development with the team for the next 18 months is a good base to work for the future.”

Pierre Gasly, Scuderia AlphaTauri, in the Press Conference

Gasly made his F1 debut for AlphaTauri’s predecessor team Toro Rosso in 2017, and has spent the entirety of his career in the top flight with the Italian squad, save for a 12-race spell at Red Bull Racing in early 2019.

Since his return to AlphaTauri, Gasly has achieved one victory (2020 Italian GP) and two more podium finishes, making him the most successful rider in the team’s history.

“We are very pleased to confirm that Pierre is staying with us in 2023,” added Tost. “He is without a doubt in the group of the best and most competitive drivers in F1 and has shown his talent throughout his time with us.”

“Without a doubt, Pierre can play an important role in the team having a successful season next year and it will be up to us to give him a competitive car, so he can continue to achieve excellent results.”

Gasly has had a rocky start to the 2022 season, plagued by bad luck, which has seen him pick up just 16 points and a best finish of fifth at the Azerbaijan GP.

His teammate Yuki Tsunoda is out of contract at the end of the year, but Tost indicated in Canada that he was impressed with how the Japanese driver was faring in his second F1 season.

“Yuki has improved a lot,” praised Tost. “He’s done a fantastic job, I must say.”
