OFFICIAL: Latifi will leave Williams at the end of F1 2022

After many rumors that pointed to the departure of the Canadian driver from the Grove structure, this Friday, September 23, it has been confirmed that 2022 will be Nicholas Latifi’s last season as a Williams driver in Formula 1.

Through a statement on their social networks, the British team announced that both would separate their paths for 2023, something reasonable after hearing the latest statements from the team director, Jost Capito, in which he spoke of Nyck De Vries and Logan Sargeant as possible future drivers for Williams.

Nicholas Latifi arrived in F1 at the beginning of 2020 at the hands of Williams and, since then, he has only managed to score points twice, at the 2021 Hungarian GP and the 2021 Belgian GP, both consecutively.

Leaving those two results aside, the numbers and performance of the Canadian driver have not been of much help to Williams during these three years, in fact, his prominence has been more linked to accidents and controversies than to notable performances.

His situation became even more complicated at the last Italian Grand Prix, when Nyck De Vries got into Alexander Albon’s car and managed to finish ahead in the standings and finish his first race in the top category of motorsport among the top ten, adding his first points, something that Latifi has not yet achieved this course.

Williams F1 director Jost Capito said goodbye to Latifi calling him “a great team driver, who has a great attitude towards his colleagues at work, is well liked and respected by all”.

“Our union is coming to an end, but I know he will put his all into maximizing what we can do in this season finale.”

“We wish him the best of luck for his future, both in and out of the car,” he concluded.

It is unknown who will replace the Canadian pilot, but as we have mentioned before, two names stand out above the rest: Nyck De Vries and Logan Sargeant. The former is also negotiating with other teams such as AlphaTauri or Alpine, while the latter needs to obtain the super license from the FIA and will do so as long as it finishes in the top five in the Formula 2 championship this season. In the chamber, meanwhile, the name of Antonio Giovinazzi also appears.
