Official: Nyck de Vries, AlphaTauri driver for the 2023 F1

End the puzzle left by Sebastian Vettel’s retirement from F1: Alonso will replace the German at Aston Martin, Pierre Gasly will take Alonso ‘s place at Alpine and Nyck de Vries will be an AlphaTauri driver for the 2023 F1 season .

The Dutchman will be Yuki Tsunoda’s teammate at AlphaTauri next year, in what will be his debut as a regular driver in Formula 1, after making his debut in the race this year.

“I am extremely excited to be joining Scuderia AlphaTauri for 2023,” said de Vries, “and I want to thank both Red Bull and the team for giving me the opportunity to drive in F1.”

“After F2, I took a slightly different path with motorsport, but F1 has always been my dream and I am grateful to be able to fulfill it. I have had many opportunities to experience the 2022 car this year and I think that has put me in a great position for next season, I hope this has helped me prepare for what is to come,” said the Dutchman who he feels will be in a home team.

“I have spent most of my adolescence in Italy in karting, I have always felt at home there, so for me it is great to join an Italian team, which already has a real family atmosphere, and I am looking forward to meeting everyone. the world and start building our relationship before next season.

The life of Nyck de Vries , a 27-year-old pilot (he will start 2023 with the 28 that he will turn next February) has taken a spectacular turn in the last month. The driver contested his third F1 practice session with Aston Martin in FP1 in Italy at the beginning of September and, surprisingly, that same Saturday he received a last-minute call from Williams to replace the ailing Albon in qualifying and in the race.

Despite the unexpected debut, he made his debut in style, holding on to ninth position in the Monza race, earning plenty of praise and taking the ‘Driver of the Day’ award at the Japanese GP. Suddenly, his name entered all the pools of the teams that still had seats available (Williams, Haas, Alpine and AlphaTauri), and he has finally signed for Red Bull to be with Faenza .

As a McLaren junior, the Dutchman has already shown his talent in the lower categories, winning Formula 2 in 2019 with ART in parallel to several LMP2 commitments in the WEC. However, he did not find a starting seat in F1 and, already under the wing of Mercedes , he moved to Formula E in 2020, becoming the first world champion in the electric category a year later, in his second year. That earned him an IndyCar test, in which he impressed, but he kept his Formula E program for 2022.

Despite a lackluster year in Formula E (ninth in the drivers’ standings), he made the most of his opportunity in F1 and has earned a starting seat in the premier class.

After becoming the 16th driver from the Netherlands to make his F1 debut, he will become the eighth to contest a full season at the pinnacle of motorsport, where he will share the grid with the country’s hero, Max Verstappen.

With the news of Pierre Gasly signing for Alpine and this one for De Vries, there are only two seats left in F1 for 2023, one at Haas and one at Williams ).
