Olivia and Oliver, the most popular girl and boy names among English

The Office for National Statistics has just revealed the most popular baby names in England and Wales, based on records of children born in 2017.

For boys, Oliver is still the most popular name of last year, since 2013, while Olivia is the name that parents give the most to girls, since 2016. Many of them are names in English, but it is curious how the Latin influence also seeps into the names that the English and Welsh choose for their children, especially for girls.

Among boys, Leo replaced Thomas in the top ten most popular names, while Hunter and Ralph replaced Aaron and Jasper in the top 100.

As for the girls, Olivia repeated in first place, Amelia remained in second place and Isla rose to third place. And Sarah, the most popular name for babies for much of the 1970s and 1980s, dropped out of the top 100 for the first time since 1904, while new entries in the top 100 for girls include the names Aurora and Hallie .
