Palou, after his debut in F1: "We have already stuck our heads out here"

All drivers dream of one day making their debut in Formula 1, the pinnacle of motorsport and the category where each of the members of the grid have earned their seat for sporting merit, although in some cases certain names have received support finance to get that hole.

The one who has not had great external help and has gotten hold of a steering wheel for the first free practice session of the United States Grand Prix is Alex Palou , who in addition to being the IndyCar champion of the 2021 season, can already say out loud that has been able to debut in the Great Circus thanks to McLaren.

The Catalan received the news that he would replace Daniel Ricciardo in the first practices a few days before, just after he carried out his second test with the Woking team at the Red Bull Ring with Patricio O’Ward , who will have to wait for the Grand Prix of Abu Dhabi to sit in the car of Lando Norris to meet the demands and regulations of the FIA for this year in terms of rookies and FP1 sessions.

When the lights turned green, Palou took to the track along with the others making their debut at the Circuit of the Americas, Théo Pourchaire in the Alfa Romeo, Robert Shwartzman in the Ferrari and Logan Sargeant in the Williams. From the beginning it was clear that he did not want to make mistakes, but the Spaniard set the pace of those making his debut from early on, although he did not leave the lower part of the peloton.

At the end of the session, the Russian [with an Israeli license] from the Prancing Horse overtook him, which left him in 17th final place , a more than good result for someone who had never been in a Formula 1 in an official session of big prize.

When he got out of the car, the Barcelonan spoke to the media, and when he was asked if he would like to see himself more often in a car of these characteristics, he said: “Obviously, who wouldn’t”.

“That’s what we’re here for, but the truth is that the job we had to do was to complete FP1 with McLaren, and that’s what we’ve done,” he explained to the DAZN F1 microphones. “We’ve already poked our heads in here.”

“I’m very happy, it was my dream to drive a Formula 1 car and be in an official session,” continued the Spaniard who made his debut at the Great Circus with the Woking team. “When I was going so fast I thought it was going to be very long, but it was only an hour.”

“It has been impressive, I think we have done a lot of work that the team needed to do from the beginning, but it was more about me and making me feel comfortable,” said Alex Palou in a reduced meeting with the press shortly after Free Practice. 1.

Despite finishing at the bottom of the table, the McLaren driver experienced what a car of these characteristics is: “It’s fast, it’s crazy. Obviously, I was lucky enough to test the 2021 car before, so that already It gave me the feeling of such a car.”

“But here you have the traffic, you don’t want to hinder anyone else,” he acknowledged. “And you have a car that is not yours, so I was trying to look after it, not get in trouble with the people who are going to race this weekend.

“So yeah, this track, I think it’s quite impressive for a Formula 1 car, especially sector one, which is very fast, it was very nice to drive,” he continued. “The hardest thing today was Turn 11, before the back straight. I think it was the wind, we had too much, and it was gusty.”

“In some laps there were no problems, and in others there was a lot [of wind] and the braking reference was lost, so I think that turn 11 was the most complicated because you did not know if it was going to be good or not,” said the Spaniard. .
