A team of scientists from the University of Granada (Spain) has concluded that people who are in good physical and psychological health are more satisfied with their sexual relationships as well as with their relationship in general. The study has been published in the journal Sexual and Relationship Therapy .
The research had a total of 2,024 participants , 50.1% men and 49.9% women, aged between 18 and 80 years. Regarding their sexual orientation, 92.7% were heterosexual and 7.3% homosexual. All the volunteers had a stable relationship of at least six months’ duration.
Among the study variables were educational level, age, gender or sexual orientation, as well as interpersonal variables such as the number of sexual partners they had had, the duration of relationships, satisfaction with the current partner or the type of relationship between the two.
In general, older age, lower educational level, greater psychopathological symptoms and longer duration of the relationship were associated with low sexual satisfaction , while a better state of physical health and greater satisfaction with the relationship were associated with high sexual satisfaction ”, he explains. María del Mar Sánchez Fuentes, co-author of the study.
Thus, the results showed that no significant differences were found regarding the levels of sexual satisfaction according to gender or sexual orientation and yes according to the vitality and depression as characteristics of the physical and mental health of the participants: “This descriptive study shows that Sociodemographic and health variables, as well as those derived from the couple’s relationship, are associated with sexual satisfaction ”, highlights Sánchez Fuentes.
