If the Friday of the Canadian Grand Prix turned out to be complicated for Sergio Pérez, on Saturday he broke the good streak that the Mexican driver had in the qualifying sessions of the 2022 Formula 1 season.
The rain became Checo Pérez ‘s main rival and the weather played a trick on him. In the third practice session he did little in the difficult track conditions, preferring to store and keep the car safe for the qualifying session.
In the first round of qualifying, Sergio Pérez was 13th in his Red Bull RB18, 1.7 seconds behind his team-mate, Max Verstappen, who was ultimately fastest in Q1.
At the start of Q2, Pérez quickly looked for a fast lap and moved into eighth position. The Mexican’s options ended when he suffered an accident in turn 3. The #11 tried to get out of the TecPro barriers but it was impossible and that left him out of the fight.
In the repetitions it was possible to notice that Checo Pérez ‘s RB18 could not turn and went straight against the protections, damaging the front part of his car. This cut him out of any chance of fighting for the top 10, forcing him to start from 13th, behind the Alfa Romeo of Valtteri Bottas and the Williams of Alex Albon, who will start from the sixth row.
This is the first time in 2022 that Sergio Pérez has not made it to Q3.
“Sorry to the whole team. It was a shame what happened because we had a great car to fight for a much better position,” Pérez told the microphones of FOX Sports México .
“I made a mistake. Now we have to think about tomorrow, be ready and try to recover to get some points,” he told the British channel Sky Sports F1 .
“Tomorrow I will try to minimize the damage, attack from the first round and see where we can finish,” concluded the Mexican.
