Pérez: "I'm fighting for pole positions and podiums every week"

Sergio Pérez has his best start in Formula 1 in the 2022 season and after four races, he is in third position in the drivers’ championship with 54 points, just five behind his Red Bull teammate Max Verstappen.

The Mexican arrives at the first race of the season in the United States, the Miami Grand Prix , after having obtained a second place in the Emilia Romagna GP, a result that became the first double being a partner of the Dutch driver and champion of the world of 2021.

Added to this is his first pole position, obtained in Saudi Arabia, as well as his classifications within the first two rows of the grid. With these results, he looks optimistically at the arrival in Miami, an unknown track that he has only prepared in the simulator, but where he hopes to maintain the good results.

“The new circuit has seemed fun in the simulator and it can be a good place to race with those long straights, but I think choosing the right level of downforce will be the biggest challenge for all the teams,” said the Mexican.

“Now I am fighting for pole positions and podiums every week, which is a great motivation to keep pushing and stay focused. I just want more week after week, and I’m looking forward to seeing what we can do in Miami.”

Checo Pérez considers the event in Florida as another home race, thanks to the presence of an important group of Mexicans in the area. It is also expected that more of Pérez’s compatriots will travel to the race, given the high connection of flights with Mexico.

“I’m excited to go to Miami this week, it’s great that the calendar is expanding more in America, which is much closer to home for me and one day I could end up living there,” said the Red Bull driver, who currently combines his residence between Mexico and Europe.

“It’s a big market for Formula 1 and I’m sure there will be a lot of Latin Americans and Mexicans in the race, so I hope to get a lot of support and it will be a very important race for the team both on and off the track.”

The high presence of Latin Americans will not be a distraction for Pérez, especially due to the way in which Red Bull can manage the issue to focus them during the competition weekend.

“These busier races are tough to manage but the team does an amazing job of making sure Max and I can focus on our driving.”
