Sergio Pérez experienced his most complicated weekend of the 2022 Formula 1 season at the Canadian Grand Prix, an event in which the Mexican driver left empty-handed after being forced to leave due to a gearbox failure of his Red Bull RB18.
Before this mishap happened, the one from Guadalajara had been far from the pace of his teammate, Max Verstappen, both in practice on Friday and in qualifying on Saturday, another session that also ended early for him after his accident in Q2 with a wet track.
Pérez’s incident took place at turn 3 of the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve and, although visually it did not appear to be extremely strong, the Mexican driver revealed that he is currently recovering from a neck injury caused by that impact.
“It’s always difficult to start the week after such a bad day,” Pérez said in an interview with Fox Sports México .
“I’m recovering from my neck, as I had a strong contracture due to the crash. I didn’t feel it [at the time], (but) when I got in the car on Sunday, it hurt a lot,” he explained.
The Mexican Red Bull Racing driver is already focused on leaving behind everything that has to do with the Canadian GP when Formula 1 travels to the Silverstone circuit the first weekend of next July, to dispute the Grand Prix of Great Britain 2022 .
“I am receiving treatments on my neck so that I can recover as soon as possible and be 100% ready for Silverstone,” said Checo.
Referring to the physical work he does during the season to stay in shape, Perez had this to say: “Every race you work out differently because your body is in a different state [of shape] all the time.”
“There are times when you need to do more cardio or more strength or more resistance. You are always working on different things. Normally the week before there are two races in a row, the work is always recovery, regenerative work is what is usually done”, concluded.
Despite his retirement in Canada, Pérez remains in second place in the drivers’ championship, although he is 46 points behind Verstappen , the current world leader.
