Pol Espargaró: “Finishing three seconds behind Márquez leaves me happy”

Misano.- Polyccio started sixth on the grid at the San Marino GP, his second best since competing with Honda, one place ahead of Marc Márquez. The Repsol team couple tried to cling to the top positions at the start, but immediately lost ground and fell out of the fight for the podium.

Enea Bastianini, Joan Mir or Alex Rins –before falling– were taking notice of Márquez and Espargaró during the race, but the #93 recovered in the final part and finished fourth after an in extremis overtaking of the Balearic Islands and Jack Miller. The #44 entered next, seventh, giving the result as good.

“I’m satisfied, although obviously I would have liked to be further ahead,” commented Pol. “It was better than I thought, my race pace was better than expected. Riders with more pace, like Mir, started behind me. “He ran away at the beginning and when that happens you lose a few tenths with each one of them, and I wasn’t able to make up the lost ground. Finishing three seconds behind Marc makes me happy. My priority was to be one of the fastest Honda riders, And we have achieved that.”

For the youngest of the Espargaró brothers, the main problem at the start was running with a full tank.

“Now we have to improve our performance with a full tank. In the first laps is where we can lose the most if we crash. With the Honda, as we gain time under braking, things get complicated with a full tank,” he said.

This Tuesday and Wednesday the MotoGP riders will carry out a test in Misano, where they will test solutions for this season and advance work towards 2022 .

“The test is very important because the Ducati are ahead of everyone and we have to turn the situation around. In the test we have to focus on several things. We don’t have the best braking, as has traditionally always happened to Honda. the most powerful motorcycle, nor the one It has no better traction, no acceleration, and no better cornering. Everything has to be improved,” he stressed.
