Pol Espargaró: "I don't want to fire rockets in case it twists"

The Honda rider was very consistent in the two practice sessions, always among the fastest both in the set-up work and in one lap, which places him, provisionally, among the top ten to move on to Q2 of the Saturday, one of his Achilles heels during the season.

Espargaró has shown concentration and, above all, personality to recover from the poor results at the Red Bull Ring , completing one of his best days since joining Honda.

“I would like it to be the start of a good weekend and open the door for me to have a good Saturday, which is what is costing us. Every weekend I start with a positive mentality, that they are going to be better, although later things don’t turn out the way I would like. It is true that we have started better than usual here, but I don’t want to create expectations. It was very cold and the other riders were careful not to fall. Here you have to refine a lot with the choice of tires and crashes are detrimental”, Pol explained.

“Tomorrow we will see the potential of the rest and we will see if we can be in Q2, but what is clear is that if I do not improve today’s time I will not be”, he warned.

Although the job invites optimism, Pol doesn’t want to get his hopes up, since he has had good days that later came to nothing.

“I don’t think it was my best day of the season. I was better at Le Mans , it was my best weekend, without a doubt. If I hadn’t crashed in Q2, I would have taken pole there and I would have had a very different race than the one I had”, he recalled his crash in the rain.

“It has started well, but I insist that it is only the first day. We can’t use hard rubber here and we have fewer tyres, we have to keep them. Everything will depend on doing a good lap tomorrow if I want to be in Q2”, he insisted.

“When things work you are more animated, but I don’t want to get excited because we have already started well other weekends and then things have gone wrong. I want to be calm so as not to despair if tomorrow things go wrong and all this is just smoke”.

Pol’s teammate, Marc Márquez, suffered a tremendous crash at a very high speed point.

“It is an ugly point to fall. I fell there years ago and it is one of those places that you do not want to fall. The speed is very high and luckily there are good loopholes, but it’s easy to get hurt and lose confidence. The crash was due to the temperature of the front end, it’s not Marc’s fault, it’s cold and if you only touch the brake a bit, being carbon, it sticks. These are things that can happen”, settled the one from Granollers.
