Pol Espargaró: "I fell with a preheated tire that we mounted to discard"

The Honda rider emerged unscathed from a horrific crash during FP1 at the German Grand Prix , just under braking for Turn 1 at the Sachsenring , the same point where he had crashed himself seven minutes earlier. But, while he came out of the first accident without a scratch, in the second he was spat out over the motorcycle and hit the asphalt violently.

“I’m a bit sore, especially my lung and ribs, and breathing hurts too,” Pol explained at the end of the day.

Despite the violence of the fall and the strong blow to his chest and right arm, Pol Espargaró is convinced that he will be able to continue on the bike this Saturday.

“I understand that I’m going to be able to do a little physio and take some anti-inflammatory and painkillers to sleep well tonight, so I hope tomorrow I’ll be fine and that it won’t be a big problem. In principle, I don’t think I have anything broken, what else it has swollen, it has been my elbow and the area of the ribs, but I already went through the same thing in Valencia (last November) and the pain sounds a little, and then I had nothing fractured, “he added in more detail.

The second crash, which, like the first, was at turn 1, where there is one of the strongest braking on the circuit, left the Honda rider without answers.

“It was a crash without gas, with a new tire on the second lap and with a good temperature (of the compounds), yes it is true that it was with a hard and overheated tire (preheated), which we had to rule out, that’s why I put it to do three laps and remove it, because normally the performance is lower after having warmed it up once, but also the grip was lower”.

“We have not understood the fall very well,” he said in reference to the tires that the supplier recovers from previous grand prix, where they were not used, but they do go through the process of warming them up and keeping them in temperature throughout the weekend, and that Michelin reassigns the same drivers for another grand prix, reheating them.

After having finally entered the wheel of Honda’s new parts tests at the Barcelona test, this weekend Pol had new material at his disposal.

“The problem is that we don’t have enough spare parts, so we will start using the new parts tomorrow (Saturday), in case there is a crash. What we have has to last us this weekend and in the next race (Assen), and it did not give us to mount it today”, argued.

Initially, Honda had decided that the new chassis and swingarm that it took to Mugello for Marc Márquez would be inherited by Takaaki Nakagami, skipping Espargaró. Upon receipt of new parts, Motorsport.com asked him if he had changed anything on that HRC correction.

“We have an aerodynamic package that we knew was not going to work at this circuit, which it has, as it is designed for circuits with longer straights and fast corners, where you don’t need as much downforce. Then we have a chassis and a swingarm that we tested in the Barcelona test and we will mount it tomorrow, it is not a panacea, but it is possible that it works a little better, it can give us that tenth, or half a tenth, that allows us to enter Q2″.

“I don’t know, until we try it on this circuit I don’t know if it will help us”, replied Pol, pretending that he had not understood the question.

What the boy from Granollers does understand is that while Honda’s improvements are minuscule, those of its rivals are gigantic.

“Today we went well, six tenths faster than last year, in 2020 on Friday the best Honda, which was me, I did 21.1, and today Taka (Nakagami) dropped to 20.6, it’s almost more than five tenths, the problem it is that while we improve half a second, the others improve a second and a half. I was fifth last year with that time, now going faster I am 13 or 14”, he lamented.

An explanation that does not mean that he recognized that he could have done better.

“Today I was not good and I think I could have done better, but even doing very well I would not have gone beyond the ninth or tenth fastest time. The problem is not that we don’t improve, that we do, the problem is that the The rest has improved a lot,” he insisted.
