In the plans of the Honda , at the start of the season in his first year in the official HRC garage, he did not suffer so much to finish the races in the top ten. After moments of difficulty in adapting to his new bike, Pol Espargaró was able this weekend at Le Mans , a circuit where he has always been fast, to give some hints of his speed, although at the end of the day he could not capture it in the goal.
“The race did not go as I wanted, I am self-critical, I was the third Honda at the finish, behind them ( Nakagami and Alex Márquez ), but far from the first, without good feelings, and without being fast in the water”, admitted the of Granollers.
Unlike other moments of the season, Pol wanted to draw positive conclusions and not project an image of dejection.
“Now we have to look at the positive and I think this weekend has had more good things than bad. The penalty was on Saturday in qualifying , everything went wrong with the fall in Q2, because we could have started on pole or among the first”, Polyccio recalled.
Overall, France has been the best weekend for Pol since he arrived in the HRC box.
“Without a doubt it has been a good weekend in dry conditions, also some good moments in the wet. In the race, in the wet, I wasn’t as fast as I wanted, but I think the weekend’s development was good. I’ve always been in the top five except in Q2, when I crashed. We have a lot of positive things to take away from this weekend. We have to keep going. Now Mugello and Barcelona are coming, we have to be competitive and improve. We are 10th in the World Cup and we have to look up”, he said convinced.
The fact that the French circuit has always gone well for Pol, he doesn’t think it hides reality.
“It was not a flash in the pan because it was at Le Mans. We have to improve what we achieved this weekend and push forward. We have to start from scratch in Mugello and work to continue being among the top five always”.
The one from Honda also explained his problems with the output device.
“Normally we use the two holeshots , like everyone else except Suzuki who only have it at the back, but today I couldn’t activate the front one due to my mistake. I got a little nervous and it’s not the best here, it didn’t help me gain positions in the first corner. But from here, I think I did well and was able to climb to fifth place, but then I had the incident with Morbidelli and I lost a lot of positions. These exit procedures are complicated and they have to be fine-tuned a bit”, settled the man from Granollers .
