Pol Espargaró: "We are not working hard enough"

Pol Espargaró is not living the best stage of his sporting life. The former Moto2 world champion faces his second year at Honda in 2022, but the results have not yet arrived . After the San Marino Grand Prix, Pol is in 17th place overall , 169 points behind the leader, Fabio Quartararo.

Coupled with the poor performance of the Honda, the rider from Granollers is not enjoying much luck. In the last Misano race he only lasted one corner, before a multiple crash ended his options.

After the race, Pol made harsh statements , and not precisely against the drivers who took him to the ground. Espargaró understands that the problem comes from Honda and its lack of improvements: “Things don’t happen by chance. We started far behind, and if you start from behind you have more problems”.

“Obviously [the crash] was not our fault,” the Catalan told the motogp.com micro. P refers to pointing to a chain reaction : “First Brad [Binder] entered the corner a bit quickly, but he didn’t do anything wrong, he was just being aggressive. But he ended up throwing Zarco, then Zarco threw Pirro and in the end Pirro threw me to me”.

Once the incident was explained, he returned his cargo to Honda . “ We cannot be complaining about everything. In the end, we finished qualifying in the last positions because we are not fast enough. That is the problem,” he added.

“Today’s crash was the result of not starting from the position we were supposed to. We can complain about the others, but we have to criticize ourselves and try to do better on Saturdays. If we qualify at the front, the races will be much less difficult.”

When asked if there was nothing he could do to save the RC213V’s low level, Pol was clear: “I can push as much as I want, but if we’re slow and the bike doesn’t work, what can I do? I want to be the fastest on the grid, and I’m still as motivated as I was on day 1. I think I’m at my best physically and mentally, and it’s very frustrating to see that you can’t take advantage of it.”

The problems in the classification begin on Friday, in the free sessions that decide who gets the direct pass to Q2. “We have tried everything this weekend [to get to Q2], but we are always hovering around tenth place, and you are always at risk. To do it you have to risk a lot. You see the Ducati that with one lap they can already go to Q2, and we have to do the perfect lap”.

Espargaró, who returns to KTM next year, stressed that they have to “work harder” to turn the tables. “It’s the only way to improve, and we’re not doing enough. How many updates have we had since Qatar? Very few. It also doesn’t look like we’re going to test a lot of things in Tuesday’s test. That way we’re not going to improve. And in the meantime, you see that the others release wings every two or three months, and they are getting faster,” he lamented.
