Portugal Weather and Climate in June

June is one of the most popular times to go to Portugal, largely because the weather is so good. Summer is on its way, and temperatures are warming up nicely, without the often oppressive August heat. The beaches and parks are starting to fill up with locals and tourists, and with the main festivals in Porto and Lisbon in June, it’s a great time to visit.

As most Portuguese cities are on the Atlantic coast, the ocean breeze generally has a cooling effect, especially in the afternoon. Still, be prepared for high temperatures at any time, especially if you are heading indoors. Popular destinations like the Douro Valley have their own microclimate and can often be significantly warmer than coastal locations a few dozen miles away.

You are likely to find plenty of sun almost anywhere in the country. In general, the temperatures are pleasant along the coast wherever you go, from Porto in the north to the southern coast of the Algarve and Lisbon in the middle.

Lisbon

Mercury is increasing in Lisbon in June, along with the number of visitors. Usually it rains very little and even cloudy days are a rarity. Expect lots of blue skies.

Temperatures can get as high as 100 ° F / 38 ° C at times, and as low as 55 ° F / 13 ° C, so be prepared and pack accordingly. You will usually find yourself wearing shorts and short sleeves during the day, switching to pants and a light jacket at night.

  • The average high temperature in Lisbon in June is 77 ° F / 25 ° C.
  • The average minimum temperature is quite mild, at 61 ° F / 16 ° C.
  • June is particularly dry in Lisbon, with an average monthly rainfall of only 0.7 »/ 17 mm. What little rain there is comes in the form of light showers, so there is no real need for a rain jacket.

Harbor

June is particularly pleasant in the north of Portugal. For the most part, expect sunny days, with constant warm temperatures throughout. However, heat waves have seen peaks as high as 96 ° F / 36 ° C, with lows as high as 48 ° F / 9 ° C.

Porto is typically a bit cooler and more humid than Lisbon, so as with the rest of the north coast at this time of year, it is always a good idea to expect some variation in temperature. Pack your bag appropriately, with warm and lightweight waterproof options, just in case! Like Lisbon, you’ll generally wear short sleeves and shorts during the day, with warmer options once the sun goes down.

  • The average high temperature in Porto in June is 73 ° F / 23 ° C.
  • The average low temperature is a bit chilly, at 57 ° F / 14 ° C.
  • At 1.8 »/ 46 mm, Porto’s average monthly rainfall in June is higher than Lisbon’s, as it is for much of the year.

Algarve

Sunny days and warm temperatures characterize the Algarve at this time of year. Although they can reach temperatures of up to 95 ° F / 35 ° C and as low as 55 ° F / 13 ° C, the climate of the south coast is temperate. Anywhere in Portugal, the Algarve gives you the best chance of having sunny and warm days all year round, and June is no exception.

As befits its laid-back beach vibe, you’ll generally come across shorts and a T-shirt in the Algarve in June. However, it is also worth wearing light pants for a night out.

  • The average high temperature in the Algarve in June is a warm 78 F / 26 C.
  • The average minimum temperature is 61 F / 16 C, the same as Lisbon.
  • Average monthly rainfall in June in Faro is almost non-existent, at 0.3 »/ 7 mm.

Douro Valley

The Douro Valley can still be comfortable in June and with less rain than winter, this is a good time for sightseeing. However, keep in mind that the temperature averages for the Douro Valley don’t tell the whole story. Being inland, the area has a more extreme climate than coastal locations, so certain summer days can be surprisingly hot.

While it is likely to be quite hot during the day, the temperature drops at night, so bring warm clothes to change into.

  • The average high temperature in Vila Real in June is 77 ° F / 25 ° C.
  • At a higher altitude than coastal cities, the average minimum temperature in the Douro Valley in June is surprisingly low at 54 ° F / 12 ° C.
  • Average monthly rainfall in June in Vila Real is 2 »/ 54 mm. A rain jacket is worth packing, just in case.
