Post offices open late on tax day

The deadline to file your state and federal taxes for 2016 is Monday, April 18. If you are not e-filing and are putting off mailing them until the last minute, here is what to do.

You will need to find tax forms. Most local libraries carry forms. Here are the New Mexico tax forms online.

Fill out your tax returns and email or mail them before midnight. Even if you file an extension, it must be postmarked by midnight April 18.

If you don’t file your taxes electronically, you can still get your returns in the mail on April 18. Many post offices are open until 5:30 p.m. M. Find the hours of a post office near you in Albuquerque.

You can also call 1-800-275-8777 and enter your zip code to find the nearest post office. If you deposit your tax returns in a blue collection box, be sure to write down the last collection time of the day to ensure that it will be collected after submitting the forms.

To help those of you who mail in your forms after 5:30 pm, there is an area post office where you can deposit mail until 7 pm:

  • US Post Office (Main Branch)
    • 1135 Broadway NE
    • Albuquerque, NM 87101

Other post office outlets will operate normal business hours on April 18.

How much postage do I need for my tax returns?

First class postage is 47 cents for the first ounce, 21 cents more for each additional ounce. If you feel like your envelope may weigh more than an ounce, make sure your returns arrive on time by adding additional postage.

The US Postal Service has products and services to help you get your tax forms on time.

New Mexico taxpayers will need to know where to send individual forms.
