Prioritizing aid to those affected by the pandemic and natural disasters in Colombia

Doing things thinking about the long-term impact for vulnerable communities, for affected groups and, in general, for society is one of BBVA’s priorities in the country.

Under conditions of pandemic, economic crisis and environmental disasters, the term sustainability and what it means takes on greater importance. Doing things thinking about the long-term impact for vulnerable communities, for affected groups and, in general, for society is one of BBVA’s priorities, an entity that, thanks to its sustainability programs, has been able to help Colombians more affected by the crisis.

That is why BBVA proposed and complied in 2020 with aid to the medical sector, to the neediest families and to those affected by Hurricane Iota in the department of San Andrés y Providencia, and those who were affected by the winter wave in several regions of the interior of the country. BBVA in Colombia was one of the first companies to respond to the call of the National Government and with the donation of a day’s salary by its employees and the contribution of the bank, it joined the campaign “Helping does us well by delivering”, with the that delivered 40,000 markets in 170 municipalities in 30 departments of the country, serving the needs of more than 150,000 people.

In order to help families and people who lost their jobs or whose income was affected by the pandemic, BBVA made transactional channels available to all its customers, such as the ATM network, the PSE payment button on its website. and the option of transfers from the cell phone using the BBVA Móvil application, so that they could make donations. Thanks to the effectiveness of the tools to transfer money and the generosity of the citizens, more than $ 240 million were raised, also used to deliver food aid to indigenous and peasant families in different municipalities of the country.

Medical biosafety

Faced with the call of hundreds of doctors and health personnel who lacked biosafety equipment at the height of the pandemic, BBVA in Colombia delivered 10,000 kits consisting of face masks, face masks, safety glasses, gloves and an antifluidic gown in 51 hospitals, of 40 municipalities in Colombia. These biosafety teams were delivered to the San Juan de Dios hospital in Pamplona, Norte de Santander; Méderi and La Samaritana Hospital, in Bogotá; Federico Lleras Acosta Hospital and the Tolima Clinic, in Ibagué; in addition to the hospitals of San Andrés Islas, Tumaco, Fusagasugá, Funza, Cáqueza, Fómeque and Arbeláez, among others, as well as the Health areas of the Army and the National Police.

ICU for the Amazon

Giving the population affected by COVID-19 the possibility of receiving dignified treatment with the necessary implements to carry out their treatment was one of BBVA’s objectives this year. To meet this goal, the bank delivered, through the Colombian Red Cross, three intensive care units (ICU) for the departments of Amazonas, Vichada and Guaviare, and complementary equipment to strengthen the existing unit in Guainía, regions that lacked this type of room and that today are part of the medical supply of the Amazon and Orinoquia health system.

Hurricane Iota and the winter wave

In November and at a time when the conditions for economic reactivation were taking place, nature raged against the department of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina, and in a single night the passage of hurricane Iota, category five, left thousands of victims who lost everything and destroyed the infrastructure of Providencia and affected that of San Andrés.

“In these difficult times that thousands of people who have been affected by the passage of the hurricane in San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina are going through, as well as the growing winter wave in different departments of the country, we have joined the Colombian Red Cross and the Solidarity for Colombia Foundation to help meet their most urgent needs, provide food aid to families and bring Christmas gifts for the children who long for them at this time of year, “said Mario Pardo Bayona, President of BBVA in Colombia.

BBVA’s first contributions will be made to the Red Cross in order to meet the most urgent needs of the affected populations. On the other hand, with the support of the Solidaridad por Colombia Foundation, more than 4 thousand kits will be delivered consisting of markets for the affected families and Christmas gifts for the children of these populations.

Regions affected by floods, landslides and avalanches in Antioquia, Chocó, Norte de Santander, La Guajira and Bolívar, among others, were the beneficiaries. It is estimated that about 5,000 affected families will receive these markets that guarantee the necessary food in times of difficulty to access the main goods and services. In addition to nutritional help, Christmas gifts will be distributed to the children, who are looking forward to it at this time of year.
