The Qatar Grand Prix entered the MotoGP calendar in 2004, in 2007 it became the first race on the calendar, and in 2008 the first in motor sport history to be held at night under floodlights.
However, next year, the Qatari event will not host the season opener for the first time in 15 years due to the fact that the track facilities will face a major remodeling, which has forced the MotoGP promoter to move the date of the event to a date yet to be determined.
“The Losail International Circuit will undergo an extensive renovation and refurbishment of the paddock area and circuit facilities by 2023. The track is already confirmed on the MotoGP calendar until at least 2031, and the works will make the venue of the most important motor sport in the Middle East further confirm its status as one of the best-equipped racing facilities in the world,” Dorna explained in a press release.
Since last year, Qatar has also entered the Formula 1 calendar, which after a grand prix in 2021 will return in 2023 for ten seasons, which has forced this reform, required by the promoters of the four-wheel competition.
“Losail will host the 2023 Qatar Grand Prix after construction is complete, meaning the event will not be the opening round, as it has been since 2007. Instead, it will take place towards the end of the season,” notes the note of the promoter of the contest.
