However, the circumstances surrounding the race left the Frenchman’s direct rivals, Pecco Bagnaia and Aleix Espargaró, without scoring, which resulted in an extension of the lead in the championship, which is now 18 points between Fabio and Peco.
For Quartararo, the result aside, the most important thing is to have suddenly stopped the bleeding of points that he had been losing since the Dutch Grand Prix , 81 in five races, but he is aware that the event was circumstantial and he clings to a favorable circuit for the Yamaha this weekend in Thailand, the next stop in the championship.
“Coming out of Motegi with a bigger lead in the championship was a positive thing,” notes Quartararo ahead of the Thai Grand Prix .
However, the Frenchman is aware that the result in Motegi was not what he expected.
“We have to work hard this weekend because finishing eighth doesn’t reflect our true potential,” adds Fabio, who hasn’t won since the double he achieved at Barcelona and the Sachsenring in early June, and who in the last six races has only managed one podium, second in Austria, with two zeros (Assen and Aragón) two eighths (Silverstone and Motegi) and fifth place in Silverstone, a trend that he hopes to correct this weekend.
“I am happy that we are going to race at the Buriram circuit next because it is a good stage for me and also for Yamaha”, he points out before recalling that “I was second the last time we raced here in 2019. I will surely give my 100 % to be on the podium again this time”, the Devil concludes confidently.
However, forecasts for the weekend point to rain every day, which could complicate things and make the Grand Prix unpredictable.
“We expect another hot, humid and possibly rainy Grand Prix at the Chang International Circuit, but we don’t mind,” said Yamaha sporting director Massimo Meregalli . “The team has really enjoyed the previous race weekends in Thailand. The Buriram circuit is nice and suits our bike,” he says.
Consecutively, the MotoGP World Championship has competed in Aragón, Motegi and now Thailand without any rest weekend in between.
“Triples are always demanding, requiring drivers and team members to put in a lot of energy without much recovery time. It’s important that we keep our focus and energy levels this weekend, especially as the championship standings are very adjusted with four races to go,” warns Meregalli.
