The leader of the championship, winner of two of the five tests that have been held so far, was very upset a few minutes after finishing the second practice session this Friday at Mugello.
In one of his last attempts to make a fast lap that would lift him to the top of the time table, the Yamaha rider found himself in the first sector of the circuit with a swarm of riders who, turned backwards, seemed to be waiting for the arrival of someone like him, who would drag them along in order to improve their position.
Seeing them ahead, Quartararo cut off the gas before starting to pump his fists into the air, visibly rearing. Despite the fact that he was able to take a last turn with which he got the fourth, the Frenchman later asked that they take action on the matter so that this practice does not become the norm.
For the Nice rider, it makes no sense that any Moto3 rider who stands in the middle of the track waiting for a good wheel is penalized, and that this can be overlooked in the heavy bike category, where a lot goes faster and where, in theory, you have to set an example for young people.
“I did a fast lap but I don’t know how, because there were a lot of people in the first sector, in the second and in the third. There can’t be that many drivers waiting for the second free test. Has no sense. I can understand it in qualifying, but not in free practice”, lamented Quartararo.
“If they penalize Moto3 riders who wait for others, why not do it in MotoGP too? We ride faster than them and it’s more dangerous. I try not to bother anyone. You can’t meet drivers in the middle of the line when you’re going for your fastest lap”, added the #20 .
To compensate for his pent-up rage, the World Championship leader was delighted after finally being able to use the starting system that allows the Yamaha to lower from the front as well.
“I’m very happy with the front holeshot . We still have to improve it, but we have Yamaha to thank. Now we have no excuse. The first to bring new things are always Ducati , but now Yamaha is on that plane”, declared the Frenchman, before giving some details about how this component will affect the starts that take place from now on: “We have to change the exit procedure a bit. It seems that you have a smaller motorcycle”.
