Unlike what happened with Joan Mir last year, when he was proclaimed MotoGP world champion, the suspense over whether Fabio Quartararo is going to exercise his right to use the number 1 on his bike has lasted less 48 hours.
After winning the title in 2020, Mir left the possibility of changing his usual 36 for 1 up in the air for months, revealing the mystery on his social networks after a long wait.
Quartararo , on the other hand, has been very clear about it from the beginning and this Tuesday he revealed that he will not wear number 1 in 2021.
In an interview with French television Canal + , Fabio ruled out the number change and argued his motivations for not doing it.
“No, it’s not worth it. I really want it to be something simple. I am far from number one today. There are a lot of people”, in reference to the level of the MotoGP riders.
“For me, the example is Valentino Rossi: he won nine times and never chose number 1. I think it’s great for the public, because it’s been years since someone wore that number”, the last to wear it were Jorge Lorenzo in 2011 and Casey Stoner in 2012.
At only 22 years old and with a future that is presumed bright, you would think that Fabio will have new opportunities in the future to change his mind. However, he also left that possibility closed.
“20 is the number with which I started and with which I will end my career,” settled the boy from the Côte d’Azur .
