In 2019, the French driver finished up to five times in second position behind Marc Márquez. Quartararo closed the year without a win and had to wait until 2020 to inaugurate his record. Since then he has six victories, while the Spaniard has not won again in that period after missing last season and reappearing this year in Portugal after nine months injured.
The Repsol Hond rider continues to improve his physical condition and the Sachsenring Circuit is presented as the ideal setting due to its characteristics to put an end to that drought. Márquez got off to a strong start on Friday and led FP1 ahead of Quartararo. In the afternoon, he opted not to fit a set of soft tires in the final minutes and finished 12th.
In a scenario where he has been unbeaten since 2010, the #93 left the impression on Friday of having taken a step forward in his physical condition, which could put him in the fight ahead on Sunday. Quartararo, who also finished second in FP2, remembers how difficult it was for the Honda rider two courses ago, but he would like to fight for victory with him again.
“I feel like he’s super strong, but so am I,” Quartararo said. “In 2019 I remember it was very difficult for me to get my first win, so I will try to do the same. He seems to be super fast, his pace seems good.
“On this track he’s super fast and I think everyone knows he’s had a really bad time, and I’d be happy for him if he gets a good result. Happy for him, but not for us, so we have to manage to try to get a result. really good here and try not to win. I’m not here for that, I’m here to fight for the win and the podium, so that’s out of my head at the moment.”
El Diablo suffered a hard crash in the first half of FP1 at turn 12, which came to nothing.
“My hand hurt, but it was from the blow. In FP2 I didn’t notice anything. At the time I was a bit scared, but everything is fine,” he clinched.
