Quartararo: "Saturdays are a nightmare, we are out of control"

The Frenchman made his appearance in the premier class in the 2019 season, scoring six pole positions in his rookie year, adding four more in 2020, for which he became known as ‘mister pole’. In his first year in the official Yamaha team (2021) he amazed by winning five pole positions in the first seven races, which catapulted him into the fight for the championship.

However, from pole position at the Catalan Grand Prix last year until today, the Frenchman has only added one more to his showcases, at Mandalika, the second race this year, despite having had 23 opportunities, the last eleven races of 2021 and the first twelve of this course.

At the end of Q2, with the fifth position on the grid surrounded by Ducati, Fabio Quartararo assured that he is “absolutely out of control” in qualifying, and that Saturdays have become “a nightmare”.

The one from Nice feels furious for not finding solutions in an art of which he was a first sword not so long ago.

“I don’t want to get angry, we have to be happy, in the end whenever I enter the box… I wouldn’t say angry, but I do feel frustrated,” he acknowledged.

“You see that we are only fifth, in Silverstone fourth, and you do laps in which you can’t take it anymore, in which you go to the limit. But this year things are like that”, he resigned himself.

“In qualifying, in each corner I don’t know if I’m going to be able to turn or if I’m going to go to the gravel,” he continued explaining. “So that’s the hardest thing. The front end moves a lot, the bike moves completely and in the end I don’t have 100% control in qualifying.

“So I’m always disappointed with the result, and the problem is that I’m getting used to it, but the most important thing is that I give my 100%, even if it’s not enough.

Despite everything, and even leaving surrounded by Ducati on all sides, the Frenchman knows that he has the pace to stand up in the race.

“In the race pace you can always be more or less good, but in qualifying I have no control. We are going to suffer like all year, and last year, but I am ready. 28 laps is different, we are not going to wrong,” he conceded.

At Silverstone Quartararo did not dare to mount the rear hard rubber because he had not tried it all weekend, and it was the winning rubber.

“We will try the soft rubber (rear) tomorrow to see if it is an option for the race. What is certain is that I will go out and give everything and I am sure that I will give war”.

On Friday, after Motorsport.com broke the news that MotoGP will introduce sprint racing on Saturdays at all Grands Prix, Fabio was one of the riders who was most critical of the manoeuvre, calling it “stupid”. 24 hours later, the Frenchman assured that his opinion had not changed at all.
